N629AG Plane Crash in Indiana Claims Four Lives

ANDERSON,IN – A single-engine Piper PA-46 aircraft crashed into a cornfield near Anderson Municipal Airport on September 6, 2024, resulting in the deaths of all four occupants.

N629AG Flight Details and Crash

The small aircraft departed from Fort Dodge Regional Airport in Iowa at approximately 6:45 a.m. Central Time, aiming to land at Anderson Municipal Airport, located about an hour’s drive northeast of Indianapolis. However, the plane ultimately went down in a nearby cornfield, as stated by Captain Darwin Dwiggins from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Dwiggins noted that the plane approached the landing site at an excessive altitude. “They were too high,” he explained. “They were instructed to alter their course and attempt another approach.” Witness accounts suggested that the pilot might have been trying to return to the airport just before the plane went down.

Witness Account

One witness described the aircraft as “flipping over and nosediving into the cornfield, igniting upon impact”. The East Madison Fire Territory shared a photo depicting smoke rising from the cornfield following the crash.

  • 68-year-old Joseph R. Scallon of Iowa Falls, Iowa
  • 19-year-old “Owen” James Renaud of Alden, Iowa
  • 41-year-old Jesse H. Ostheimer of Alden, Iowa
  • 36-year-old Braden W. Hicks of Manson, Iowa

FAA and NTSB Investigation and Response

The NTSB is overseeing the investigation into the accident, stating that the aircraft crashed “under unknown circumstances”. An NTSB investigator was expected to arrive at the scene on Friday evening to begin documenting the site and examining the aircraft. The NTSB’s investigative process typically involves several key phases:

  1. Initial notification and decision to investigate
  2. On-scene fact-gathering
  3. Analysis of collected data
  4. Determination of probable cause
  5. Issuance of a final report and safety recommendations

Throughout the process, investigators will analyze flight logs, maintenance records, weather data, and any available recordings. They may also conduct laboratory tests on key components, interview witnesses, and potentially perform component tests, teardowns, or simulator testing.
